Client Penticton Search & Rescue

All SAR members must be familiar with the set-up of each station. Some 45 active members put in 7,000 to 10,000 man-hours a year in training, rescue tasks, community events and fundraising, said Smith.
They practise every Monday night and usually one weekend day, year round. It takes dedication. About $43,000 is needed each year to cover day-to-day operations - and that's without purchasing any new equipment, noted Smith. About half must be raised by members. As well, they must buy and maintain their own personal rescue equipment at an average cost of $1,500 to $2,000. With its current equipment, the unit can't support many more members in the field, said Smith.

But it does need volunteers. "There's a paper trail that goes with every search, so volunteers do that as well," said Cpl. Andy MacLean, SAR liaison with the Penticton RCMP. "It's not just bush work," he added. "There's actually paper-pushers."
